Last Rickover DraftNovember 19, 2013
Naval Institute Press will publish my Rickover leadership book next August. Because of the necessary steps in the process, I submit the manuscript on 2 December, so this week is set aside to edit the final draft.
I was reading this morning the draft of an Andy Marshall manuscript discussing the early success of RAND. The paper notes that, in order to emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to problems, the early RAND did not have an rigid lines of organization because, as noted in their 1957 Welcoming Pamphlet, “the more each individual acts on his own responsibility the better.”
This is, of course, the same approach that Admiral Rickover followed in organizing the group responsible for the design and safety of nuclear power for the Navy.
